Overheard in Room 738

Ernest Campbell

I had the wrong preacher!!!

Dear all,

My sincere apologies.  When I handed out the sermon I said this was from Robert McCraken (pastor of Riverside Church from 1946-1967).  It is actually Ernest Campbell (pastor of Riverside Church from 1968-1976).  This sermon comes deep into his ministry at the church which may have helped its reception.

Sorry to both men for the mix up!

Maybe conversation stopped because you said you'd understand

if no one responded to this one. Also you cautioned people

to really think hard before hitting the "send" button.

I addition, this is a topic is one people are uncomfortable discussing.

I thought the sermon was a good one. You had rejection,

acceptance and understanding.

I feel the chaplain's message helped me. A member of our

family has just told us they are homosexual. I'm going to see this

person at a family gathering along with their partner this Saturday.

I've been thinking about what to say and how to react.

The judge that handled our daughter's adoption is homosexual.

She seems like your neighbor and it's all very natural. She shows

you pictures of her kids. She is calm and confident.

I have a feeling that my realtive and her partner are going to be

a lot more "in your face" about their homosexuality.

A homosexual friend of our daughter told her that when someone

first anounces that they are gay they feel they have to show it.

Any helpful advice?

Good Conversation has stopped

Dear all,

I seem to have stopped all conversation with my last posting on taking the Bible in context.  I hope you are just busy or thinking of a reply or another thought on the subject.  I simply wanted to offer up another viewpoint I had read and I hope complicates the situation some.  Just because I quoted an expert in no way means you should not disagree.  There is some of his article I disagree with.  So, if I did bring conversation to a close, let me open it back up now!!!

What DO You Think?

So - what do you think of this sermon?  Did you like the narrative style as opposed to the lecture style of Fosdick or Timmer?  Do you think his message came through clearly, and if so, what was his intended message?  Did the sermon style make it easier to accept difficult (prophetic) content?

Let's start there!
