1st Day in Minneapolis/St. Paul (July 2)
I met up with another commissioner from the Milwaukee Presbytery at the airport this morning and we flew here together. The welcoming committee here seems VERY well organized – when we arrived there were folks at the baggage claim who got us to the shuttle bus that brought us to the hotel. We got checked in, and then the welcoming committee gave us directions to the Convention Center. For those of you who were afraid that I was going to just sit and listen, relax. I will probably be walking 2-3 miles a day!
We went through registration, and received more things to read. I will be serving on the Bills and Overtures Committee. It’s primarily an “administrative” type committee—we set the docket for GA, refer business back to committees, handle appeals, handle recommendations on time limits on debate, review protests, etc., etc., etc. Part of our preparation is to visit the other committees to see what will be coming up, so in one sense it is great for getting an understanding of overtures before they come to the floor.
I’ll try to post something daily, but if there is nothing worth your reading, I won’t. There are other sources of information, however. Visitors to the homepage of the Web site for the 219th General Assembly (2010) (www.pcusa.org/ga219) during the assembly (July 3–10) may watch the plenary sessions of the highest governing body of the PC(USA) as they happen. One of the highlights will be the election of the Moderator of the 219th General Assembly (2010) on the first evening of the assembly.
Also, the Office of the General Assembly (OGA) will also share breaking news and other announcements before and during the assembly through Twitter. The feed will be on the homepage of the 219th General Assembly Web site (www.pcusa.org/ga219) under the username presbyGA. It may also be found at www.twitter.com/presbyGA.
Please keep all of us in your prayers. The Presbyterian system is based in part on the idea that commissioners can hear from God concerning His will for the Church (General Assembly is NOT a “representative democracy” in that commissioners do not represent the views in their home church or home presbytery; we’re supposed to try to understand God’s view), and that means that we need you to help us hear well.
